Furse

Marguerite Furse is my wife’s grandmother.

James Furse was born in England in 1774.  He married Mary Cater and they migrated to South Carolina in 1812.  I have so far been able to document only one child, Joseph Jackson Furse (born 1823).  He married Elizabeth Roberds Williams.  Through that marriage, however, a wonderful array of interesting and significant ancestors has emerged, including Thomas Wylly, the ancestor through whom Lynn has proven her Daughter of the American Revolution ancestry (we know there were other Patriot ancestors, male and female, we just haven’t proven those through the DAR yet).

Joseph Jackson and Elizabeth Williams Furse had several children, including Thomas Furse (born 1855) who married Caroline McTeer – and that marriage opened up yet another wonder family of interesting McTeer ancestors.  Marguerite Furse was born in Early Branch, South Carolina, in 1893.  She married Robert Harrell (born 1888 in Bosley Gates, North Carolina) and they had three children.  One of those was Marguerite Page Harrell, my wife’s mother.  Marguerite died very young, in 1930, at the age of only 37, leaving her husband with three small children.

Thomas and Caroline Furse had four children.  The oldest was their only son, Thomas McTeer Furse (called “McTeer” by almost everyone, born 1890).  Marguerite (“Rita”) was born next in 1893, followed by Annie in 1895 and Lily in 1898.  All four lived to graduate from college, but McTeer, Rita and Annie all died relatively young.  Annie was married to Rev. Warren Ariel, but died in 1917 only a few months following their wedding.  Marguerite was married to Robert Harrell and had three children, Robert, Marguerite (my wife Lynn’s mother) and James.  But she too, died young, in 1930, when your youngest child was barely two years-old.  McTeer died in 1926, in New York City, in a tragic accident.  He never married.  Of the four children only Lily lived a long life.  Lily lived for many years in Stuart, Florida, dying in 1988 in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
